Jasprit Bumrah’s anticipated return has stirred excitement in the Mumbai Indians camp ahead of their crucial IPL 2025 home match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Sidelined since January due to a back injury sustained during the Sydney Test against Australia, Bumrah joined training at Wankhede Stadium, bringing visible energy and optimism to the team.
During Sunday’s session, Bumrah warmed up with some playful left-arm spin, mimicking teammate Mitchell Santner, before switching to his trademark pace. He bowled full-throttle for over 25 minutes, troubling even senior batters like Rohit Sharma with his sharp, swinging deliveries. His comeback is not just symbolic but timely, especially with MI having lost three of their first four matches.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed Bumrah’s availability, noting that he has completed sessions with the National Cricket Academy and been cleared by MI’s medical team. While they’re thrilled to have their pace spearhead back, the coaching staff plans to ease him into competitive action, acknowledging his long layoff. Jayawardene emphasized the value of Bumrah’s experience, not just in performance, but in mentoring younger bowlers like Deepak Chahar.
Bumrah’s return strengthens Mumbai’s bowling, especially in the death overs, where his precision and pace are vital. His chemistry with swing partners Trent Boult and Chahar could be key. Meanwhile, RCB’s Tim David, a former MI player, will face a familiar and formidable challenge as he goes up against Bumrah, whom he knows well from past net sessions.
