In a significant development amid ongoing hostilities, Hamas has responded to a U.S.-proposed ceasefire plan by expressing willingness to release 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others. However, the group has stipulated conditions, including a permanent ceasefire, complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and assurances for uninterrupted humanitarian aid—demands not encompassed in the current proposal.
The U.S. envoy, Steve Witkoff, criticized Hamas's response as "totally unacceptable," emphasizing that the proposal was intended as a foundation for proximity talks aimed at securing a 60-day ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office affirmed Israel's agreement to the updated plan, while highlighting Hamas's continued refusal.
Hamas faces mounting pressure from Gaza's 2.2 million residents enduring dire conditions, as well as from international mediators. Despite this, the group remains steadfast in its demands, having previously rejected similar proposals that did not guarantee a complete and permanent end to the conflict.
