Severe monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Northeast India, claiming at least 28 lives and causing widespread destruction in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. The India Meteorological Department attributes the deluge to a depression over Bangladesh.
In Arunachal Pradesh, seven people died when a landslide swept a vehicle into a gorge in East Kameng district. Two more fatalities occurred in Lower Subansiri district due to similar incidents.
Assam's capital, Guwahati, experienced severe urban flooding, leading to the closure of schools and government offices. Five individuals lost their lives in a landslide in Bonda on the city's outskirts, while three others died in flood-related incidents in Golaghat and Lakhimpur districts.
Mizoram reported five deaths amid over 100 landslides across the state. Meghalaya recorded six fatalities due to landslides and flash floods. In Nagaland, a truck driver was killed in a rockfall incident.
Authorities have been placed on high alert, with rescue operations underway and advisories issued to avoid travel during heavy rains. The situation remains critical as the region braces for continued adverse weather conditions.
