How Gen Z is redefining leadership through empathy and collaboration?

Generation Z is not just entering leadership roles - they’re changing what leadership means. Emerging research and workplace trends reveal that Gen Z leaders prioritize empathy, inclusivity, and alignment with personal values, distancing themselves from rigid, top-down management styles.

According to a recent study by the International Journal for Multidisciplinary Research, Gen Z leaders emphasise emotional intelligence and fairness in decision-making, seeking workplaces that support authenticity, sustainability, and employee well-being. They expect leaders to be transparent, engage in meaningful dialogue, and allow people to bring their whole selves to work.

These expectations have real consequences: organisations that cling to hierarchical structures or outdated management norms risk disengagement and high turnover among young talent. To adapt, companies are urged to redesign leadership pipelines, adopt flatter team structures, invest in mentorship (including reverse mentorship), and foster cultures that support mental health, flexibility, and purpose-driven work.
