India’s wedding industry is booming, valued at $130 billion and generating nearly one crore jobs. From catering to venues, fashion, and entertainment, almost every sector benefits from weddings. On the surface, this seems like a sign of economic growth.
But the glitter masks harsh realities. Research shows an average family spends nearly three times its annual income on weddings. The immense financial pressure often fuels stress, debt, and exploitation.
Even more concerning is the persistence of dowry practices. Despite strict legislation, dowry-related violence and deaths continue, revealing deep-rooted gender inequality. Families often quietly contribute to this system, purchasing lavish gifts and participating in “aesthetic” wedding displays while ignoring the societal harm.
The wedding market, thus, is a double-edged sword: an economic powerhouse that perpetuates inequality and cultural harm. Understanding this reality is crucial for breaking the cycle and encouraging more responsible celebrations.
