Swami Sivananda, born on August 8, 1896, in the Sylhet district of Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh), is a revered yoga guru from Varanasi, India. Despite the challenges of losing his parents and sister at a young age, he dedicated his life to spiritual pursuits and humanitarian service.

Under the guidance of Guru Omkarananda, Swami Sivananda mastered yoga and meditation. For over three decades, he has been teaching yoga on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi, inspiring countless individuals to adopt a disciplined and healthy lifestyle. His daily routine, marked by early rising, regular yoga practice, and a simple diet of boiled food without oil or spices, exemplifies his commitment to a life of austerity and self-discipline.

Beyond his contributions to yoga, Swami Sivananda is renowned for his selfless service to humanity. For the past fifty years, he has been serving 400 to 600 beggars affected by leprosy, providing them with food, clothing, and other essentials. His dedication to the well-being of others reflects his deep compassion and commitment to social welfare.

In recognition of his contributions, Swami Sivananda has received several awards, including the Yoga Ratna Award and the Basundhara Ratan Award in 2019. On March 21, 2022, he was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards, for his contributions to the field of yoga. His humility was evident during the award ceremony, where he bowed down before President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, earning widespread admiration.

Swami Sivananda's life is a testament to the profound impact of yoga, discipline, and selfless service. His teachings continue to inspire generations to lead lives rooted in simplicity, health, and compassion. His longevity and vitality serve as a beacon of the benefits of a disciplined lifestyle, making him a revered figure in the realm of yoga and spirituality.
