Movie review: Live-action How to Train Your Dragon stuns with realism and heart

DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon returns in a live‑action adaptation that captures the emotional core of the beloved 2010 animated classic while adding richer, more grounded stakes, writes Vishakha Punjabi. The film immerses audiences in Hiccup’s world, bringing realism to his bond with the Night Fury dragon, Toothless—whose nuanced CG‑animatronic portrayal is strikingly lifelike.

Mason Thames brings vulnerability and depth to Hiccup, translating the character’s coming‑of‑age journey into live action. Nico Parker’s Astrid shines with intelligence and emotional subtlety, while the film leans into familial drama—Stoick’s stern fatherhood carries genuine weight in this version.

The tone shifts toward a more serious narrative: humor takes a backseat as the remake explores grief, identity, and the cost of bravery. Beautifully shot in rain‑drenched landscapes and windswept cliffs, the visuals foster a mythic atmosphere grounded in reality.

The orchestral score, which builds on the original themes, amplifies both exhilarating and tender moments, making this a deeply emotional ride. While some may miss the lighter comedic beats, this live‑action version delivers a powerful experience for both fans and newcomers. With its focus on emotional resonance over nostalgia, the film earns its wings.
