Recovery teams at the crash site of Air India Flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad have retrieved the second black box and 29 additional bodies, raising the confirmed death toll to 274, including 33 on-ground fatalities. The Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew, crashed moments after takeoff on June 12 into a medical college hostel in the Meghani Nagar area.
Only one passenger, a British national of Indian origin, survived the crash and is receiving treatment, as authorities work to identify victims through DNA and personal records. The aircraft was en route to London Gatwick when it lost altitude and collided with the building just 30 seconds into its climb.
Investigators are analyzing black box data and focusing on possible mechanical issues—such as landing gear, engine thrust, or flap malfunction—as well as environmental factors like midday heat and potential pilot error.
Global leaders, including PM Modi and King Charles III, expressed profound sympathy, and support centers have been set up for bereaved families. Tata Group–owned Air India has pledged substantial compensation and assistance to affected households.
