In recent years, cybercrime has evolved- and one alarming trend is the rise of mule accounts. These are bank accounts used by scammers to move stolen money, often without the account holder even realizing they’re part of a crime.
A major investigation in Jammu & Kashmir uncovered over 7,200 such accounts in 2025, with estimates suggesting the number could reach 30,000. The worrying part? Many of these account holders were regular citizens—students, daily wage workers, and villagers—who were tricked or lured with small payments.
There are two types of money mules: unwitting victims, who unknowingly share Aadhaar or PAN details for fake job offers or government schemes; and willing participants, who rent out their bank accounts in exchange for a commission. Scammers then use these accounts to route illegal money, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace the original crime.
Once an account is flagged, banks freeze it, leaving the owner locked out of their own funds. Meanwhile, the real criminals often escape detection.
Experts warn that scammers recruit mules via social media, Telegram, or shady apps. Some even pose as legitimate businesses needing help with transactions.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
- Never share banking details with strangers—even if it sounds like a job.
2. Avoid accepting or sending money for unknown people.
3. If you suspect misuse, report it immediately to authorities or your bank.
Being aware is your first step in staying safe from financial fraud.
