Wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat has chosen a ₹4 crore cash prize offered by the Haryana government, skipping the other two options: a government job and a land plot.
The 30-year-old was disqualified from the 2024 Paris Olympics for being overweight before her gold medal bout in the 50-kg category.
Despite that, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had promised to honor her like an Olympic silver medallist, and kept his word.
Under the state's sports policy, Vinesh could choose between:
-
₹4 crore cash
-
A Group 'A' job
-
An HSVP land plot
Vinesh submitted her decision to the sports department earlier this week.
In the Haryana Assembly, she reminded the CM of his promise and said, "It's not about money, it's about respect."
Vinesh, who led protests against ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh, also won the Julana seat in the Haryana Assembly elections on a Congress ticket.
Calling her "Haryana's pride," the CM said her honor would not be affected by a technical disqualification.
