Tender coconut water, or nariyal paani, is a beloved summer refreshment in India, valued for its natural cooling and hydrating properties. However, a recent social media discussion has sparked debate over its pricing and necessity.
A Chennai-based X user, Mahesh Iyer (@vincimax), shared his observation that the price of coconut water in the city had been fixed at ₹60 per piece, regardless of the locality. He noted that while pricing varies in other cities, Chennai vendors seemed to maintain a standard rate for around 200 ml of liquid.
This post caught the attention of Dr. Deepak Krishnamurthy (@DrDeepakKrishn1), a Bengaluru-based doctor, who responded with a controversial take. He called coconut water an "overrated drink," suggesting that unless one had direct access to a coconut tree, there was no need to purchase it. Instead, he advised people to simply drink water.
His remark divided opinions online. Some users defended coconut water, highlighting its nutritional benefits and their personal positive experiences. Others sided with the doctor, questioning whether the drink was truly essential or just an expensive trend. A few even asked him to suggest better alternatives.
The discussion quickly gained traction, reflecting a broader conversation on the cost versus the benefits of everyday health choices. While coconut water remains a popular choice for many, this debate has led people to reconsider whether it is truly a necessity or simply a luxury in today’s market.
