In a progressive move to enhance the safety and comfort of gig workers, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to build air-conditioned rest areas along important roads in the city. Inspired by similar initiatives in Dubai, these rest areas aim to provide safe, comfortable spaces for gig workers, especially those in food and e-commerce delivery services.
The proposed rest areas will be constructed in neighborhoods such as Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Royapettah, Mylapore, and T.Nagar, with design work already underway. Currently, gig workers often gather on busy roads like Anna Salai, Khadar Nawaz Khan Road, and Uttamar Gandhi Salai, facing safety risks, especially during adverse weather conditions like the monsoon and summer heat.
This initiative is expected to benefit women workers significantly, as it will provide a safe environment and promote better security while they rest during their shifts. The air-conditioned rest areas are set to transform the working conditions of gig workers in Chennai, offering them much-needed relief and support.
