The Centre has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court seeking to be heard before any interim orders are passed on pleas challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The Act, which received President Droupadi Murmu's assent on April 5 after intense parliamentary debate, has sparked widespread legal and political uproar. Over 10 petitions including those by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, and civil rights groups like APCR—have challenged the Act's constitutionality.
Petitioners argue that the Act imposes arbitrary restrictions on Muslim religious endowments, undermining fundamental rights and religious freedoms guaranteed under Articles 14, 15, 21, 25, 26, and others. The government, however, has defended the law as a historic reform aimed at enhancing transparency in Waqf administration.
With hearings likely to begin April 15, the Supreme Court's decision could have far-reaching implications on religious rights and property laws in India.
