Pakistan's government could pay Rs 14 crore in compensation to Masood Azhar, the UN-designated terrorist and chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), after 14 of his family members were reportedly killed in recent Indian airstrikes.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has pledged Rs 1 crore in compensation for each of the deceased, according to a press release from the PM's Office.
The strikes, part of Operation Sindoor, targeted terror camps in Bahawalpur-JeM's operational hub and home to its headquarters at Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah.
A statement allegedly from Azhar confirmed that the victims included his sister, her husband, a nephew, niece, and several children.
If Azhar is the sole legal heir, he may receive the entire compensation amount. Additionally, PM Sharif has committed to rebuilding structures destroyed in the airstrikes, a move that has prompted scrutiny. Indian defence officials maintain that the precision strikes only targeted terror infrastructure.
With Pakistan now pledging to reconstruct the damaged buildings, Indian authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely to ensure these sites are not reused for militant activities.
