As the Congress party prepares to inaugurate its new headquarters on Wednesday, controversy has erupted over its naming. Posters outside the venue call for the building to be named “Sardar Manmohan Singh Bhavan” in honor of the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, rather than “Indira Bhawan.”

The demand gained momentum after BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a video of the posters on social media. In his post, Malviya highlighted the Congress party's perceived disregard for Singh, suggesting naming the headquarters after him would be a fitting tribute to his contributions. “Rahul Gandhi referred to Manmohan Singh as a mentor, yet chose a vacation over mourning his death. Naming the building after him would rectify the disrespect shown to him during his lifetime,” Malviya wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Echoing the sentiment, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Congress of sidelining Singh's legacy to favor the Gandhi family. “This reflects their family-first mindset. Congress has consistently insulted stalwarts like Narasimha Rao, Ambedkar, and Pranab Mukherjee while glorifying the Gandhis,” he posted.

Manmohan Singh, who passed away at 92 on December 26, was cremated with full state honors at Delhi's Nigambodh Ghat. His demise prompted national mourning, but Rahul Gandhi's trip to Vietnam during this period attracted criticism, further fueling BJP's claims of disrespect.

As Congress inaugurates its new headquarters, the controversy raises questions about how political legacies are shaped and the priorities of leadership in honoring their stalwarts.
