Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of covering up alleged corruption involving industrialist Gautam Adani. Gandhi criticized Modi's comments during a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump, where the Prime Minister dismissed the Adani issue as a “personal matter.”
Rahul Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his criticism, saying, “If you ask questions in the country, there is silence. If you ask abroad, it is a personal matter! Even in America, Modi Ji covered up Adani Ji's corruption!” Gandhi further accused the Prime Minister of prioritizing the interests of his associates over the nation's welfare, stating, “When filling a friend's pocket is 'nation building' for Modiji, then taking bribes and looting the nation's wealth becomes a 'personal matter.'”
The controversy stems from a question posed to PM Modi during the press conference in the US regarding whether Gautam Adani's alleged activities were discussed during his meeting with President Trump. In response, Modi emphasized India's democratic values and familial philosophy, stating, “India is a democratic country, and our culture means the entire world is a family. When it comes to such personal matters, two leaders of two countries will not get together to discuss individual topics.”
The opposition has seized on Modi's remarks, accusing him of evading accountability and shielding Adani from scrutiny. Gandhi's remarks add fuel to the ongoing political debate over alleged favoritism and crony capitalism within the government.
The issue has once again highlighted the tension between the ruling BJP and the Congress party, with the Adani controversy emerging as a focal point in their political rivalry.
