Red Bull has unexpectedly dismissed Christian Horner, the team’s only principal since its 2005 inception, following a glittering 20‑year tenure. Under Horner, Red Bull claimed eight Drivers’ and six Constructors’ championships, and 124 Grand Prix victories.
In a statement on July 9, 2025, Red Bull’s managing director, Oliver Mintzlaff, praised Horner’s “tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking,” but announced that Laurent Mekies—formerly of their junior Racing Bulls team - will succeed him as CEO . Alan Permane is also taking over at the Racing Bulls.
The departure comes amid a turbulent period for Red Bull. The team slipped to fourth in the 2025 Constructors' standings, a far cry from previous years’ dominance . Compounding matters were internal tensions - including allegations of misconduct against Horner in 2024, clearance by internal investigations, dissent from Max Verstappen’s camp, and the departure of chief designer Adrian Newey.
The shake-up signals a new chapter for the team, with Red Bull emphasizing the need to stabilize performance and retain top talent - especially beloved driver Max Verstappen, rumored to have an exit clause if results don’t improve .
