Punjab is on high alert following escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The state government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions, schools, colleges, and universities, whether government, private, or aided for the next three days.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced the decision on X, citing the evolving security situation. Initially, schools in six border districts—Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran were closed.
These districts are part of Punjab's 532-kilometre border with Pakistan.
Additionally, all police personnel have had their leaves cancelled, and blackouts have been reported in several cities, including Pathankot, Mohali, Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur.
The alert follows India's targeted airstrikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched in retaliation for the recent massacre of 26 people in Pahalgam.
In response, Pakistan fired multiple missiles and drones targeting Indian military bases in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur. However, India's air defence systems intercepted at least eight of them.
The Integrated Defence Staff confirmed there were no casualties, and the threat was neutralized using both kinetic and non-kinetic methods.
