Rekha Gupta, the newly elected Chief Minister of Delhi, took the oath of office today, marking a significant shift in the capital's political landscape. Gupta, who won from Shalimar Bagh by defeating AAP's Bandana Kumari, becomes the fourth BJP leader and fourth woman to hold Delhi's top post.
One of her first major announcements has already stirred controversy—she has vowed to convert former CM Arvind Kejriwal's renovated official residence, dubbed ‘Sheeshmahal’ by the BJP, into a museum. The bungalow at 6 Flagstaff Road had been at the center of a political storm due to allegations of extravagant renovations. A CPWD report in October 2024 revealed luxury additions, leading the Centre to launch a probe into alleged irregularities.
Gupta emphasized her commitment to fulfilling all promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that women's rights will be a key focus of her tenure. Meanwhile, speculation over BJP leader Parvesh Verma being a contender for the CM position was dismissed, with Gupta assuring that the party stands united.
As she takes charge, all eyes are on how she navigates Delhi's governance and the political challenges ahead.
