A heated moment at Mahakumbh Mela has sparked online debate after a viral video captured a sadhu slapping a man who copied his distinctive one-hand-in-the-air gesture. The video, widely shared on social media, shows the sadhu walking in his meditative state, only to be imitated by a bystander. Within seconds, the sadhu loses his temper and delivers a slap before walking away.
The incident has divided netizens. While some defended the sadhu's reaction, calling it justified, others questioned whether physical aggression was necessary. A user commented, “Thappad kyu mara?” (Why did he slap?), while another argued, “Baba did the right thing. These content creators harass people everywhere with their cameras and should be taught a lesson.”
The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, has seen a surge in social media influencers and YouTubers trying to capture viral moments. However, their presence is increasingly causing friction with sadhus and devotees, who often seek a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere.
Supporters of the sadhu argue that many content creators cross the line, treating religious figures as entertainment props for clicks and views. Meanwhile, critics question whether responding with violence aligns with the values sadhus are meant to uphold.
As the debate rages on, the incident sheds light on the growing conflict between digital creators and traditional spiritual figures, raising an important question—where should the boundary be drawn between online content and religious sanctity?
