On World Liver Day, Dr. Rinkesh Kumar Bansal, Additional Director of Gastroenterology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, highlighted the rising threat of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in India. Unlike Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD), which results from excessive alcohol consumption, NAFLD affects individuals who consume little to no alcohol. It is commonly associated with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome.
Dr. Bansal emphasized that NAFLD is becoming increasingly common worldwide. He noted that modern diets rich in processed foods and sugars are significant contributors to this condition. The disease often progresses silently, leading to serious complications like liver cirrhosis or cancer if left untreated.
To combat this growing health concern, Dr. Bansal recommends regular liver screenings, especially for individuals with risk factors such as obesity or diabetes. He also advocates for lifestyle modifications, including a balanced diet low in processed foods and regular physical activity, to prevent or reverse liver damage.
The increasing prevalence of NAFLD underscores the need for greater public awareness and proactive health measures. As Dr. Bansal points out, addressing dietary habits is crucial in safeguarding liver health and preventing the progression of this silent disease.
