U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have exchanged notably cordial messages as trade negotiations persist, even amid mounting tensions over recent tariffs. On September 9, 2025, Trump announced that negotiations are ongoing to resolve trade barriers and voiced confidence in a successful outcome. He said he looks forward to speaking with Modi, whom he described as a “very good friend”.
On September 10, Modi reciprocated via a post on X, calling the U.S. a “close friend” and “natural partner.” He expressed optimism that the talks would unlock the “limitless potential” of the bilateral relationship, and confirmed both teams are working to conclude discussions “at the earliest.” Modi also said he anticipates speaking with Trump soon.
Their exchange marks a thaw after the Trump administration earlier imposed sweeping 50 percent tariffs on Indian exports - an escalation that triggered sharp criticism from New Delhi and heightened concern over strained ties. Yet, both leaders now emphasize cooperation and mutual gains as the talks gain renewed momentum.
