In a surprising turn in India-US relations, former U.S. President Donald Trump made a late-night phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to wish him a happy 75th birthday, referring to him affectionately as “my friend Narendra.” The gesture is being interpreted by analysts as more than just a courtesy - it may mark the start of efforts to reset ties strained by trade disputes and diplomatic friction.
Modi responded warmly, expressing thanks to Trump for the greeting and reaffirming his commitment to elevating the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership. He also backed Trump’s push for a peaceful resolution in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Observers suggest that the timing and tone of the call matter: tensions had built in recent weeks over tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Indian imports, particularly oil from Russia. The presidential greeting may thus be a symbolic olive branch, aiming to soften rhetoric and explore renewed cooperation in trade and foreign policy.
