The Pink Test, held annually at the Sydney Cricket Ground, is a unique cricket event aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer. Ahead of the fifth and final Test between India and Australia, the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Australian team’s caps were adorned in pink to mark the beginning of the Pink Test. The shift from the traditional Baggy Green caps to Baggy Pink symbolizes the commencement of the event.
The Pink Test was initiated to honor the legacy of Jane McGrath, the wife of former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath, who tragically passed away from breast cancer. Following her diagnosis, Glenn McGrath founded the McGrath Foundation in 2005 to support breast cancer patients and survivors. The foundation partners with Cricket Australia to raise awareness and fundraise for the cause.
The Pink Test began in 2009, a year after Jane McGrath’s death, with the first match held between Australia and South Africa. The event has since become a significant fixture in Australian cricket, with the stands, signage, and even stumps turning pink during the match. The upcoming match between Australia and Pakistan will mark the 16th edition of this annual event, highlighting the ongoing commitment to breast cancer awareness and support.
By incorporating this meaningful event into the cricket calendar, the Pink Test continues to honor Jane McGrath’s memory while promoting vital awareness and funding for breast cancer research and support services.
