The Government of India has launched the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), a ₹2,481 crore initiative under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. Approved by the Union Cabinet, this centrally sponsored scheme aims to promote chemical-free, traditional farming practices rooted in ancestral knowledge.
Farmers adopting natural farming avoid chemical inputs, relying on integrated techniques with indigenous livestock, diverse cropping systems, and agro-ecological methods tailored to local conditions. This mission promotes region-specific practices to ensure safe, nutritious food for all while reducing input costs and dependence on external purchases.
Over the next two years, NMNF will reach 1 crore farmers, covering 7.5 lakh hectares through 15,000 clusters in gram panchayats. It emphasizes soil health restoration, biodiversity support, and resilient cropping systems to withstand climate risks like droughts and floods.
Natural farming benefits both farmers and consumers by reducing cultivation costs, improving soil health, and providing access to healthier, more nutritious food. Additionally, it ensures fertile land preservation for future generations by enhancing soil carbon content, water efficiency, and biodiversity.
To support farmers, the mission offers a simplified certification system, dedicated branding, and market access for natural produce. A real-time, geo-tagged online portal will monitor its implementation, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
The NMNF is a transformative step toward sustainable agriculture, promoting healthier ecosystems, resilient farming, and food security across India.
