Zomato has quickly backed down after adding an extra fee for vegetarian food deliveries, following a big reaction on social media. The issue started when a LinkedIn post by Rohit Ranjan went viral. He called the new fee a “luxury tax” on vegetarians, making fun of Zomato for treating them like they were part of a “premium subscription plan.”
Ranjan shared a screenshot of his bill, saying, "Being a vegetarian in India feels like a curse! Zomato's new charge for vegetarian deliveries has turned us into a premium plan." He also thanked Swiggy, a competitor, for not having the same charge.
Zomato's CEO, Deepinder Goyal, saw the post and quickly apologized. He admitted it was a “stupid” mistake and promised to remove the extra fee immediately. Goyal also said he would fix the problems within the company to make sure this wouldn't happen again.
This fast apology helped calm the anger online. However, many people are still surprised by the idea of a “veg tax.” For now, vegetarians can be happy that they won't have to pay extra for their food deliveries.
