A spurious liquor tragedy has claimed 15 lives and left nearly 10 others critically ill in Punjab's Majitha block, Amritsar district. The victims, mostly from Bhangali Kalan, Thariewal, Sangha, and Marari Kalan villages, reportedly consumed the illicit alcohol on Sunday evening. Several died by Monday morning, with some families initially concealing the cause of death as “heart attacks”.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney confirmed the death toll, which may rise. Authorities revealed that all liquor was sourced from a single supplier. Two FIRs have been registered, and six arrests made, including Prabhjit Singh and Sahib Singh, the alleged main distributors.
Investigations are underway to track interstate supply networks. This incident echoes the 2020 Majha region hooch tragedy that killed 130. Locals are demanding swift justice and strict action against the liquor mafia responsible for this preventable mass poisoning.
