The US State Department has clarified former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard's controversial remarks about an "Islamic caliphate," following sharp condemnation from Bangladesh. Gabbard, speaking at an event, suggested that extremists were working toward establishing an Islamic caliphate, indirectly referring to South Asian nations, including Bangladesh.
In response, Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry called the statement “baseless and offensive,” demanding an official explanation. The US distanced itself from Gabbard's views, emphasizing that she is a private citizen and does not represent official policy. A State Department spokesperson reaffirmed strong diplomatic ties with Bangladesh and praised its role in countering extremism.
Despite the clarification, Gabbard's remarks have sparked debate, with some accusing her of Islamophobia while others defend her stance on security concerns. The controversy highlights the delicate nature of political rhetoric in international relations, especially between allies.
