A notice announcing "beef biryani" for Sunday lunch at Aligarh Muslim University's (AMU) Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall has set off a firestorm of debate after going viral on social media.
The notice, allegedly issued by two "authorized" individuals, stated:
"Sunday's lunch menu has been changed, and beef biryani will be served instead of chicken biryani as per demand."
As outrage spread across the university, AMU's administration scrambled for damage control, calling it a "typing error." Officials assured that those responsible had been issued a show-cause notice.
The controversy escalated as students widely circulated the notice online. Initially, the administration remained silent, but as criticism mounted, it dismissed the issue as an "unintentional mistake."
University authorities clarified:
"The matter was brought to our attention. The notice contained a clear typing error and was withdrawn immediately. It lacked official signatures, raising concerns about its authenticity."
Despite this, the issue has taken a political turn. BJP leader and AMU alumnus Nishit Sharma lashed out at the administration, accusing it of shielding radical elements and failing in its duty.
"The administration's handling of this is disgraceful. The notice was publicly displayed, and senior food committee members were responsible. Such incidents suggest the university is turning a blind eye to student misconduct," Sharma alleged.
With tensions running high, questions remain: Was it really a harmless mistake, or a deeper issue lurking beneath the surface?
