Fear of ED, CBI raids prevents Bollywood from speaking up: Javed Akhtar

Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has candidly explained why Bollywood's top stars often remain silent on political matters. In a conversation on Kapil Sibal's YouTube channel, Akhtar said many in the industry fear reprisals such as tax raids or investigations by agencies like the ED or CBI if they criticise the establishment. Comparing the situation to Hollywood, he pointed out that stars like Meryl Streep can speak freely without fearing such repercussions.

Akhtar emphasised that film personalities are part of the same society and face similar insecurities as ordinary citizens, despite their glamorous profession. He acknowledged being among the few voices willing to speak out but expressed empathy for those who choose not to. Known for his fearless criticism of all political parties, Akhtar also admitted to clapping back at trolls on social media, despite advice from friends to stay above online spats, saying, "Sometimes you have to answer back."
