Kunal Kohli's Hum Tum, now re-releasing 21 years after its original run, was never meant to star Saif Ali Khan. Initially offered to Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan, and Vivek Oberoi, the romantic comedy faced rejection at every turn. Hrithik, facing a career slump, doubted he could do justice to the role. Aamir declined due to personal turmoil during his divorce from Reena, and Vivek Oberoi backed out after demanding script changes.

It was only after these refusals that producer Aditya Chopra suggested Saif. Kunal Kohli reimagined the film with Saif in mind, and the actor delivered a career defining performance alongside Rani Mukerji. The film went on to earn over ₹41 crore and cemented Saif's position as a romantic hero.

With its theatrical re-release on May 16, fans will get to relive a classic that almost never had the lead it's now best remembered for.
