On Monday, July 14, 2025, the Supreme Court was informed by Attorney General R. Venkataramani that India is doing everything within its diplomatic capabilities to prevent the execution of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya, sentenced to death in Yemen for murder. The AG described the situation as “very complex” and cautioned that India has “reached the point” of what it can offer given Yemen's unique geopolitical context and absence of formal diplomatic ties .
During the hearing, the government revealed it has attempted private-level negotiations, including outreach to an influential Yemeni sheikh and discussions with the public prosecutor, as well as seeking a temporary stay of execution . However, no reprieve has been granted.
Petitioners reported that her family is exploring "blood money" arrangements - compensation under Sharia law - but discussions have stalled as the victim’s family reportedly refuses to accept .
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta expressed deep concern and adjourned the case to July 18 for updates. With the execution date looming, the Supreme Court continues to closely monitor evolving diplomatic and negotiations efforts.
