Gamophobia is an intense, irrational fear of marriage or commitment that affects a person's ability to build or maintain close relationships.
Unlike typical hesitation, this phobia involves anxiety, panic, and even physical symptoms like chest pain or rapid heartbeat when faced with the idea of long-term commitment. Causes include past trauma, insecure childhood attachments, toxic relationships, or even cultural and financial pressures.
It's not listed as a separate disorder in the DSM-5, but it can be diagnosed under specific phobias or anxiety disorders. Treatment options include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, EMDR, and sometimes medication. Coping strategies such as journaling, self-reflection, and relaxation techniques can also help.
Left untreated, gamophobia can lead to isolation, loneliness, and long-term emotional distress. With proper support and therapy, individuals can overcome this fear and develop healthy, meaningful relationships. Seeking help is the first step toward healing and emotional freedom.
