In a recent discussion, Ameera Shah, Executive Chairperson of Metropolis Healthcare, shed light on the significant role diet plays in mental well-being. She emphasized that consuming processed and spicy foods can adversely affect gut health, which in turn impacts mental health.
Shah explained that the gut and brain are intricately connected, and disturbances in gut health can lead to mental health challenges. "Our gut health is very deeply connected to our mental health," she noted, highlighting that many people overlook this crucial link.
Supporting this perspective, nutritionist Tanya Khanna stated, "The food you eat plays a powerful role in shaping your mood, focus, and overall mental well-being." She advocates for incorporating nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and fermented foods to support mental health.
Conversely, diets high in ultra-processed foods and sugars have been associated with increased risks of depression and anxiety. These foods can promote inflammation and negatively affect the gut-brain axis, leading to mood disturbances.
Experts recommend adopting a balanced diet rich in whole foods to maintain both physical and mental health. By being mindful of dietary choices, individuals can take proactive steps toward enhancing their mental well-being.
