In a tragic development, an eight-year-old boy from Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, has died due to Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), also known as "monkey fever." This marks the third fatality in the state attributed to KFD in 2025, as confirmed by health authorities.
KFD is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks, primarily in forested areas. The disease was first identified in 1957 in the Kyasanur Forest of Karnataka. Symptoms include high fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and bleeding problems. Without prompt medical attention, the disease can be fatal.
As of April 2025, Karnataka has reported 150 confirmed KFD cases, with Chikkamagaluru district accounting for the highest number at 80 cases, followed by Shivamogga with 64 cases, and Uttara Kannada with 5 cases. The state health department has intensified surveillance and public awareness campaigns in these regions.
Preventive measures against KFD include avoiding tick-infested areas, wearing protective clothing, and using tick repellents. Health officials are also conducting vaccination drives in affected districts, although vaccine availability remains a challenge.
