With rising heart attack cases, knowing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) can be the difference between life and death. CPR is an emergency technique used when a person's heart suddenly stops beating. It helps maintain blood flow and oxygen supply to vital organs until medical help arrives.
According to the British Heart Foundation, CPR involves two main types — Hand CPR and Mouth CPR. In Hand CPR, the rescuer presses the patient’s chest 100-120 times per minute using both hands to keep the blood circulating. In Mouth CPR, oxygen is given directly to the patient through mouth-to-mouth breathing.
CPR should be performed when a person is unconscious, not breathing, or has no pulse, often during a heart attack or cardiac arrest. Timely action is crucial—CPR within five minutes of cardiac arrest significantly increases survival chances.
In India, CPR training is still limited but urgently needed. Learning this basic skill can truly save lives.
