The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the Delhi Assembly elections today (January 7) at 2 pm. This announcement will officially kick off the race for control of Delhi's 70-member Assembly, whose term ends on February 23.
In the last two Assembly elections, AAP dominated the polls, securing 67 and 62 seats in 2015 and 2020, respectively. The BJP struggled to make an impact with single-digit wins, while the Congress failed to win any seats, despite its 15-year dominance before 2015.
This time, the political landscape is particularly charged. AAP, under Arvind Kejriwal, is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the BJP is intensifying its campaign with allegations of corruption against AAP. The Congress, though overshadowed in recent years, is preparing for a competitive fight. Interestingly, despite contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together as part of the INDIA bloc, AAP and Congress will face off separately in these Assembly elections.
AAP has already declared all its candidates, with Kejriwal contesting from the New Delhi constituency for the fourth time and Atishi seeking re-election from Kalkaji. This election is not just about numbers but a test of trust and leadership in a politically vibrant capital.
The official schedule announcement will clarify the timeline for polling and results, marking the beginning of an intense political battle in Delhi.
