India and New Zealand are set to clash in the Champions Trophy final today, a tournament where both teams have a rich history. While India is making its fifth appearance in the final, New Zealand will play their third.
New Zealand's first final came in the 2000 ICC Knockout, which later became the Champions Trophy. That tournament remains their only ICC title to date. Meanwhile, India has lifted the trophy twice - first in 2002 as joint winners with Sri Lanka, and again in 2013 after defeating England.
The head-to-head record in ICC knockout matches slightly favors New Zealand. The two teams have met four times in such high-stakes encounters, with New Zealand winning three times - once in the 2000 ICC Knockout, once in the 2019 World Cup semifinal, and once in the 2021 World Test Championship final. However, India claimed victory in their most recent meeting, the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal.
In overall ODIs, India holds the upper hand. Out of 119 matches played between the two sides, India has won 61, while New Zealand has secured 50 victories. Their record in ICC ODI events, however, is perfectly balanced, with both teams winning six matches each out of 12 encounters.
As they prepare for yet another battle, history, statistics, and recent performances add to the excitement of this much-anticipated final. Will India claim their third Champions Trophy, or will New Zealand break their long wait for another ICC title?
