India and China resume their air services after 5 years of border disputes

In a significant development signaling improved relations, India and China have agreed to resume direct air services after nearly five years. This move comes as both nations work towards resolving their differences over trade and economic matters, following a tense period marked by the deadly 2020 border clash.

The agreement was reached after a high-level meeting in Beijing between India’s Deputy Ambassador, Vikram Misri, and China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi. The discussions resulted in both sides agreeing to negotiate a framework for the resumption of direct flights "at an early date." This marks a positive shift in bilateral ties as the two countries move to rebuild trust and ease tensions that had escalated in recent years.

China has expressed interest in strengthening its economic relationship with India, especially in the face of mounting pressures from the United States. There are indications that China seeks a stronger and more strategically sound partnership with India to ensure economic stability, particularly amid external challenges.

Additionally, a separate vice-ministerial level meeting between Indian and Chinese officials concluded with an agreement to facilitate the exchange of journalists between the two nations, further promoting bilateral cooperation. This initiative is expected to foster better understanding and open communication channels between the people of both countries.

Bilateral trade between India and China has shown resilience, with trade figures rising by 4% to $118.40 billion for the fiscal year ending in March 2024. However, this growth is largely driven by Indian imports from China, highlighting the ongoing trade imbalance between the two countries.

As relations continue to thaw, both India and China appear committed to mending ties, with hopes of a more stable and cooperative future. The resumption of air services and the emphasis on economic dialogue reflect the ongoing efforts to rebuild bilateral ties, especially after the tensions of recent years.
