India is preparing to take a big step towards cleaner skies. By the end of this year, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will start producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at its Panipat refinery. This biofuel, made from sources like used cooking oil, municipal waste, and agricultural residue, could cut aviation emissions by up to 80% compared to regular jet fuel.
SAF is often called a “drop-in fuel” because it can be blended with traditional jet fuel without changing aircraft engines or fueling systems. Aviation experts say SAF alone could deliver 60% of global aviation’s decarbonisation goals, making it the single biggest tool in reducing the industry’s climate impact.
However, there are hurdles. SAF costs twice as much as regular fuel, requires new infrastructure, and feedstock availability is still a challenge. Yet, the push is strong. India has also received ISCC CORSIA certification, a global green standard, making commercial production possible. From 2027, airlines flying internationally will be required to use SAF blends under global rules.
This could be the beginning of a greener, more sustainable aviation future for India.
