Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel in the Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir on Monday, marking a significant milestone for both tourism and defense in the region. The 6.5-kilometer, two-lane tunnel connects Gagangir and Sonamarg, improving year-round accessibility to the popular Sonamarg tourist resort.
The Z-Morh tunnel, constructed at a cost exceeding ₹2,700 crore, is expected to revolutionize connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg. Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet, it bypasses the avalanche-prone and landslide-prone areas, ensuring safer and faster access to the region. The tunnel also features a 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage, enhancing its safety features.
The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The tunnel, which began construction in May 2015 and was completed in 2024, has been fully operational since its soft opening in February 2024.
This project, part of the larger Zojila tunnel initiative, is crucial for both civilian and military use. The Z-Morh tunnel will facilitate uninterrupted access to the Baltal and Ladakh regions, essential for the smooth movement of goods, tourists, and defense personnel.
PM Modi also praised the efforts of the construction workers who braved difficult terrain to complete the project. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) termed the Z-Morh tunnel a transformative development that will unlock the region’s full potential for trade and tourism.
With advanced technologies for real-time updates, the Z-Morh tunnel sets a new standard in regional infrastructure, offering enhanced travel experiences and bolstering the region’s economic growth.
