The Kuttiyadi coconut, a unique variety cultivated mainly in Kozhikode’s Kuttiyadi region, is on its way to receiving a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Known for its high yield, large fruits, thick kernel, and resistance to pests and drought, this tree can live for more than 100 years, making it a farmer’s treasure.
Farmers say the coconut yields better than other varieties and produces more oil, making it highly popular. Each year, the Agriculture Department sources seedlings from Kuttiyadi to distribute across Kerala. However, growers face challenges like unpredictable weather and pest attacks, which have reduced yield and income.
To help farmers, the Kavilumpara gram panchayat began efforts three years ago to secure the GI tag, allocating ₹3 lakh for documentation. With support from Kerala Agricultural University and the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, the application is moving forward.
If granted, the GI tag will not only highlight Kuttiyadi coconut’s uniqueness but also open better marketing opportunities at national and international levels, offering fresh hope to thousands of farmers.
