At a White House cabinet meeting on August 26, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump once again claimed he defused a potentially nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan. Trump asserted that he called Prime Minister Modi, warning that no trade deal would proceed unless tensions ceased—and threatened tariffs “so high your head’s going to spin.” He proclaimed the ceasefire was secured within five hours of his conversation, citing the downing of “seven jets” worth around US $150 million as evidence of the escalation he helped avert.
Indian authorities, however, firmly deny any third-party involvement. They maintain that the ceasefire on May 10 originated from direct military channels—specifically, between the Directors General of Military Operations of both countries. India has labeled Trump’s claims as “baseless.”
This development comes amid escalating U.S.–India tensions, with new 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods set to take effect as Trump promotes a tougher economic stance.
