In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, the government of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) has implemented emergency measures to prepare for potential conflict. Residents near the Line of Control (LoC) have been advised to stockpile food and essential supplies, while tourist entry into Neelum Valley and other LoC-adjacent areas has been suspended.
PoK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq announced these measures after an all-party meeting, emphasizing the need for preparedness amid speculation of military retaliation from New Delhi. The government has also closed religious seminaries and established a Rs 1 billion Emergency Response Fund to support relief efforts in the event of conflict.
Civil defence forces in PoK have been placed on high alert, and helpline 1122 has been activated to assist residents. Efforts are underway to ensure that roads remain open in key LoC constituencies, including Neelum, Jhelum, Poonch, Haveli, Kotli, and Bhimber.
The Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the deaths of 28 civilians, has significantly heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations. India has attributed the attack to Pakistan-linked militants, while Pakistan denies involvement. Both countries have since taken retaliatory steps, including suspending a river water-sharing treaty, closing their airspaces to each other, and increasing military activities near their border.
