In today’s fast-paced world, prolonged sitting, whether at work or during leisure activities, poses serious health risks. Health experts warn that sedentary habits contribute to chronic conditions like cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes, and obesity. Research emphasizes that inactivity is not just about weight gain but a major health concern.
A groundbreaking study by the University of Iowa linked physical activity to better overall health. The study demonstrated that even small lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity, can drastically improve health outcomes. Physical inactivity is linked to leading causes of death, including CVD, cancer, and diabetes. Despite the evidence, most healthcare providers do not prioritize screening for inactivity, missing opportunities for early intervention.
The American College of Sports Medicine's "Exercise is Medicine" initiative advocates for treating physical activity as a vital sign, encouraging healthcare providers to assess it during regular check-ups. The University of Iowa study found that individuals who exercised at least 150 minutes weekly had better cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, and better blood sugar control.
Patients who were active experienced fewer chronic conditions, including lower rates of obesity, hypertension, and depression. Routine screenings like the Exercise Vital Sign (EVS) survey could help identify inactive patients early, allowing for targeted interventions. These screenings, often covered by insurance, could become a key component of healthcare, highlighting the role of regular movement in maintaining long-term health.
