President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping executive order to reform US elections, mandating citizenship proof for voters, restricting mail-in ballots, and banning foreign donations. Citing India, Germany, and Canada as examples, Trump argued that the US lags behind in election security.
The order requires documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and directs federal agencies to verify voter lists. Mail-in ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted, with states risking federal funding for non-compliance. Additionally, the order prohibits QR codes in vote counting and bars foreign nationals from funding elections.
Trump, who has long challenged US voting systems, declared that elections must be "honest and worthy of public trust." His move is expected to spark legal and political battles as Democrats push back against restrictions they see as voter suppression.
