This festival season, shoppers have more to consider than just discounts—GST 2.0 is set to change the way you shop. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the new GST rates will come into effect on September 22, coinciding with the start of Navratri.
The GST overhaul simplifies tax slabs: rates of 18% and 28% have been removed, leaving 5% and 12% for most goods, while “sin goods” like alcohol and tobacco will attract 40% GST. Everyday items—from soaps to small cars—will benefit from lower taxes, potentially making festival purchases cheaper.
For big-ticket items like cars, electronics, or appliances, shoppers may wonder: should you wait until September 22? While lower GST rates promise savings, the timing of inventory replenishment may affect how quickly discounts reach consumers.
Experts suggest that those who can wait could enjoy maximum savings, but urgent needs or limited stock may justify early purchases.
This festival season, smart shopping means planning around both discounts and GST benefits—a strategy that could save you significant money.
