On Vaisakhi in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, summoned thousands to Anandpur Sahib. There, he made a shocking request, he asked for a head. Silence fell over the crowd.
Then, one man stepped forward. Guru Gobind Singh took him into a tent and returned with a bloodied sword. He repeated the request. Four more followed. Each time, the Guru emerged alone.
To everyone's amazement, all five men reappeared- alive, dressed in saffron robes. It was a test of faith and courage.
These five were Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Mohkam Singh, and Bhai Sahib Singh who became the Panj Pyare, or the Beloved Five.
They came from different castes and regions, symbolizing equality and unity. The Guru initiated them into the Khalsa, the community of committed Sikhs, and then humbly asked to be initiated by them himself.
This act shattered social hierarchies and declared that no one stands above the collective spirit.
To this day, the Panj Pyare lead major Sikh ceremonies and symbolize bravery, devotion, and selfless service. Their legacy lives on as the beating heart of the Sikh identity.
Their courage changed Sikhism forever, and it all began with five willing souls.
