On April 25, 2025, Bharatiya Janata Party's Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh was elected Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), defeating Congress with the BJP’s dominant 117 councillors. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) abstained, alleging BJP's “sabotage and horse-trading.” Singh, a former North Delhi Mayor, promised to accelerate Delhi's development, focusing on landfills, schools, and civic amenities. A B.Sc. and LLB graduate, Singh entered politics in 2017, winning the GTB Nagar ward.
His swift rise in BJP followed his Akali Dal roots and a controversial 2022 Jahangirpuri demolition drive under his leadership. Singh's reserved demeanor and strategic timing were evident during the drive, aligning with BJP's stance. With AAP's defections bolstering BJP’s MCD strength, Singh aims to transform Delhi under the party’s “triple engine” governance.
