Following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26, India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, a decision made by the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the treaty “most unfair” to the region, citing its lack of local support. The treaty, brokered by the World Bank, allocates the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) to India and western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) to Pakistan.
Pakistan condemned the suspension as “water warfare,” warning it could be an “act of war.” Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to discuss the suspension's implications today. The move, aimed at pressuring Pakistan over cross-border terrorism, risks escalating tensions, with Pakistan vowing legal action via the World Bank.
